Breweries

In Germany, beer brewing is a very old tradition. In fact, the world’s oldest brewery has its home there. This brewery in Freising in Bavaria is still producing beer and – as almost all German breweries – has voluntarily committed itself to brewing in accordance with the “German Beer Purity Law”, which dates all the way back to 1516. This requires that the beer be produced from hops, malt, barm and water, without any other extraneous additives. However, malt, grain, barm and hops are not just added to the water and left there; these ingredients are later also removed from the process. The only ingredient present from beginning to end is water. Yet, after all is said and done, this water contains alcohol, has taken on color and flavor, and is then called “beer”!

There are about 20,000 different varieties of beer – a number that changes every year. This is because, even in brewing, creativity knows no bounds: there are beers with oyster extract or chocolate flavor, or there is chili beer, fruit beer, hemp beer, heather beer, love beer, corn beer, rice beer, or juniper beer, and that’s just to name a few. The list of extravagant and classic beer types could go on and on.
Whatever the beer type, however, the brewing procedure is always the same. Steeping, heating, boiling, cooling, stirring, fermenting, siphoning and bottling are always part of the process. A great variety of different machines and materials is therefore needed – and of course, this equipment has undergone enormous improvements over the centuries toward ensuring hygiene and consistent high product quality. Also, many different types of media must be conveyed during the brewing processes, such as brewer grains, mash, condiments, and every conceivable type of barm and diatomaceous sludge.
